To implement the government's economic growth and poverty alleviation efforts, the Cooperative Department under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives is one of the most government departments. The number of people present in this department is 4975. Registrar and Director General of the Co-operative Department is the head. Office of Co-operative Directorate is up to Upazila level according to organizational structure.
For conducting cooperative-based activities, decentralization of power up to division, district and upazila level has been decentralized under cooperative law and rules. As a result, the people hoping to get the services can get any co-operative services locally. In order to provide field service, joint registrar at district level, district co-operative department's office at district level and upazila level co-operative department offices are available.
The existing services of the Co-operative Department can be divided into four categories ie statutory, semi-judicial (development) and promotional. Under the statutory service, the registration of the Committee, inspection, audit, annual accounts, if necessary, the termination of the non-performing society. Involvement in the activities of co-operative societies, settlement of disputes, and services of the semi-judicial co-operative department.
On the other hand, cooperative society management, education and training for the promotion of business efficiency, providing services and financing are development activities.
